It became a wilderness area in 1975 @ 36,977 acres it is the largest NFW in the southeast. (The Cohutta Wilderness ajoins the Big Frog Wilderness (8,055 acres) across the state line in TN.

The Cohutta Wilderness in GA is part of the larger 95,265 acre CWMA.

Highest Points: Big Frog Mountian 4,224(TN) East Cowpen (4,200 ish)
Major Rivers: The Conasauga River, and Jacks River. These 2 give you good reason to always carry sandals when in the Cohuttas.

My Review of Trestles Trails Sleeping Bag (Regular)

Originally submitted at Rock Creek Outfitters

The Trestles Trail Sleeping Bag by Marmot is a super lightweight bag that can be used in the dog days of summer or used as a liner with a warm bag in the colder months.

I have owned this bag now for about 4 years. There is nothing better to sleep in in the summer, epecially the hot humid southern nights. I always stay cool and dry. I use this bag on ocassion during the winter as a liner. It packs small about the size of a nalgene bottle, and weighs very little.

Jacks River Falls

So we made a 2 night trip into the Jacks River Falls area via Beech Bottoms Trail. The weather was perfect despite one night of rain. This are has been recoving nicley after many years if abuse. But for some reason people still seem to want to camp in the closed off area. Any way here are some pics.....

Jumping into the top pool.

Pros: Durable, Compact, Lightweight, Easy To Clean

Best Uses: Hiking, Backpacking, High Altitude

Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer

What Is Your Gear Style: Minimalist

I have owned and used the heck out of this cookset for 3 yrs now. My description says it all. It is a very simple no frills cook set. My MSR Pocket rocket and large can of fuel fit in there perfectly. It is a little slippey on the top of the Pocket Rocket, and the hadles do get a little warm so just wait about 30 seconds.. But those are minor problems. It is durable, I have burnt noodles onto the bottom and scrubbed them off with river rocks. It now has a nice petina from some campfire cooking. For the durability, weight, and price it can not be beat!

Best Uses: Hiking, Car Camping, Backpacking, Day trip

What Is Your Gear Style: Comfort Driven

I bought this pack to go along with me on a 5 day trip to Cumberland Island GA. It far exceded my expectations on this trip. First it doubles as a stuff sack: it is perfect for your sleeping bag or your clothes. It is light weight and carrys well. The pull top closing system is simple, fast, and effective. This pack does not have and back padding, I did not find this to be a problem as I had my Camel Back to pad my back. I carried it all day on a 10 mile hike with a rain jacket, water filter, lunch, 1st aid kit, and Camel Back with no problem. By the end of the trip everyone was asking where to pick one up.

Cons: Difficult to Use

Best Uses: Hydration Packs, Running, Water Bottles, Hiking/Camping

Bought this to upgrade from my older Camelback. It is tasteless and easy to clean. I found the top a little hard to open sometimes. But aside from that no wet back!

Cumberland Island Update

3 weeks ago I was invited on one of those once in a lifetime trips. Cumberland Island, GA. I was going with 3 veteran's and 2 other newbies like me. After the long drive from Dalton to St Mary's (the jumping off point for excursions to Cumberland Island) we settled into our hotel The Riverview. I highly recomend this place. Great food and a great little bar. We awoke early Sunday morning to a beautiful day and began to unload our gear for the ferry ride over (just across the street from the hotel). The Ferry ride only take about 45 minutes. Once on the island you grab some carts for your gear (for those camping at Sea Camp) and then head into the Ranger Station for a interpertion and campsite assignments (your name is called then you choose in the order your name was called). There is a cold water bath house and running water at Sea Camp. Once you hike the 1/2 mile to camp and get set up its time to explore! The Beaches, The Ruins, The Dunes, The Marshes, The Wildlife there is so much to see is amazing

Cons: The Zipper Snags On Ocass

Best Uses: Cold Conditions, Backpacking, 4 Season camping, 3 Season Camping, Car Camping

What Is Your Gear Style: Comfort Driven

I have used this product from the cold moutians of North Georgia to the coast. I have spent nights in the snow down to 15. To wet nights on the coast of Georgia when it dipped down to 20's and 30's Everyone else in our party froze, while I just zipped up and slept sug as a bug. I have not been cold in this bag yet, but I am warm sleeper. I generally just sleep in undies and a t shirt. This bag breathes well (I have never felt clammy) and dry's quickly. It is a little tight but that's what you get with a light weight bag. And the zipper snags every once and a while, but I have never really found one that does not. Like I said not really that big of a deal. It has some minor down leak, but no worse than my Western M bag. Plain and simple for the price you can not beat it. This bag out preforms many of the more expensive bags I tried out before this one.

Best Uses: Car Camping, Relaxation, Year-round, Families, Backyard, Backpacking

Describe Yourself: Midrange Shopper

I have used my Hammock extensily during the late spring, summer, and early falls seasons. It takes a little getting used too at first but after a night or 2 its hard to ever sleep on the ground again. I have also had this product get soaking wet (due to a leaking camel back) I took it out and hung it up and in 30 minutes DRY!

Pros: Powerful, Lightweight, Compact, Easy to Light

Best Uses: Backpacking, Hiking

Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer

What Is Your Gear Style: Comfort Driven

Its hard for me to give something 5 stars. But this does exactly what it says. It lights fast and cooks fast, plain and simple. It does not care for the wind and cold (10 or below) and can be a little shaky so make sure its on level ground. But it will still works well in those conditions. I have used it in the rain, mud, sleet, and snow. It has never failed me.

My Review of Hubba Fast & Light Tent (1 Person)

Originally submitted at Rock Creek Outfitters

The Hubba Fast and Light Tent (1 person) by MSR is the ultimate freestanding solo tent.  The Hubba weighs less than 3 pounds (1.3kg) and has been given a new, all-in-one hub-and-swivel pole design that is stronger than ever and still simple to use.

Pros: Packs small, Easy To Set Up, Lightweight, Waterproof

Cons: Zipper Snags

Best Uses: Backpacking

Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer

What Is Your Gear Style: Comfort Driven

This is a very well designed tent, it has two small pockets on the inside. I have stayed in it in the rain and when it was dry outside. The tent is narrow so if your claustrophobic this may not be the best tent for you, but it has a roomy vestibule. But with that out of the way it delivers what it promises, Light weight, east set up, mild condensation (show me a tent that has none), and you can with some practice pack it down very small.

My Review of Trekker Chair

Originally submitted at Rock Creek Outfitters

Excellent Pickup

Pros: Compact, Lightweight, Dries Quickly, Easy to Pack, Comfortable

Best Uses: Backcountry Camping, Campgrounds

Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer

There is nothing better after a long day on the trail than to be able to sit and lean back (and I don't mean on a log). I have carried a Crazy Creek for years. But I wanted something lighter weight, and easier to pack. And I found the perfect solution. This chair is it, it rolls up small (about the size of 2 tent poles), its comfortable and dries quickly. Just watch where you sit you butt you could puncture you pad, and watch out for sparks!
